Yay Austin. At least the chief is trying to get out ahead of this. He claims that the video, or any report of the arrest, never made it up the chain of command. I'm not entirely convinced.

It’s a good thing that the cop wasn’t violent. Otherwise he would have shot the poor woman. Throwing people to the ground is the way that gentle people treat others.

It’s not a race thing, it’s a class thing. Every society has a criminal class, it just so happens that in many places this happens to correlate with black (for a multitude of reasons, both personal, societal, and structural, dating back for hundreds of years). There are plenty of places that are 100% white and you’ve got the rednecks and everyone else. Rednecks have violent tendencies. It just sucks that in most of America, these class lines are so aligned with race and seem like every issue threatens to start a race war. $0.02.

Perhaps, but we don’t hear reports about cops disproportionately shooting the poor to death in those other places.

Very true. But part of the problem is that it’s far easier to delineate race than the various other nuances of social classes. I know a couple LEOs in small towns around AL, and they’re always on about the repeat offender meth-heads, town drunks, wifebeaters, etc. They're the guys that get arrested or warned constantly, sometimes with excessive force, but there's not really much of a story there. I truly don't think most cops are inherently racist, but the situations they're put into sure make it hard to argue that. And it definitely doesn't help when the police force for an area doesn't resemble the people they're policing.

A good read, thanks Dusty. While still a little heavy on anecdotes, it makes a good point that this has been going on a long time. My great gramps was a police chief and later an “activist” judge in Philly; his son was a criminal defense attorney for many years and represented a lot of blacks and immigrants in the 40s and 50s. I definitely heard some stories passed down. I still believe a lot of this stems from “picking on the poor people” and the race issue is somewhat secondary. Whoever the wealthy/ruling class is will make the rules and will tend to make scapegoats out of the rest. I'm just hoping iPhones and bodycams put a quick stop to this before it escalates further.
